Duties

-The Maritime Electrician installs and repairs wiring, fixtures, and equipment for all electrical services aboard ship and in the terminal area and offices facilities:

-Installs conduit to bulkheads with brackets and screws.

Strips insulation from wire ends and solders ends to terminals. Connects power-supply circuits to radio, radar, sonar, fire control, and other electronic equipment.

Tests electrical characteristics, for example, voltage, resistance, and phase angle, in circuits, using voltmeters, ohmmeters, and phase rotation indicators.

May also construct instrument panels.

Troubleshoots electrical equipment and circuits using appropriate test equipment to detect and effect required maintenance, repairs, or replacement requirements.

Performs maintenance and repair of generators, switchboards, controllers, circuit breakers, electrical motors, distribution panels, alarm and lighting circuits.

Conducts insulation resistance measurements of electrical cables to determine condition and effects repairs or replacements as required.

Conduct the installation and/or alteration to electrical systems aboard ships.

Maintains adequate inventories of electrical spare parts and requisitions replacements as required.

Maintains electrical system maintenance histories notating date, and extent of repairs and/or alterations.

Verify the quality/conditions of the equipment/merchandise

Assist supervisor as requested.

  • Handles and fastens mooring and towing lines during docking, mooring and departure operations.
  • Ensures that lines are properly tied to docks or floating plant which tug is tending.
  • Snubs and ties lines properly to minimize breakage and to secure plant safely.
  • Cares for, renews, and splices rope and makes rope fenders. Performs light rigging when required.
  • Operates engines or winches controlling anchor or deck equipment.
  • Performs rigging and other work associated with pile driving activities including using either a drop or air hammer.
  • Performs general vessel maintenance duties and keeps boat in ship shape condition.
  • Maintains, repairs, cleans, and paints the deck, hull, superstructure, and storage areas.
  • Prepares surfaces to be painted by removing old paint utilizing tools and methods of choice or those assigned.
  • Keeps lines, tools, paint brushes, etc. clean and in proper places.
  • Assists in making any general repairs aboard the vessel, including repairs to machinery and equipment.
  • Assists higher graded crew members with repairs and the overhauling of equipment and machinery.
  • Cleans, makes minor repairs, replaces parts and makes adjustments as directed.
  • Obtains channel depths by using lead line or sounding poles.
